LIVING HISTORY vs. MUSEUM
EXHIBITS
A traditional museum
exhibit takes historical artifacts, preserving them and
presenting them -sometimes in
context of how they were used, sometimes isolated in a glass case - augmented
by signage and an occasional docent to explain usage, design or historical
context. Most museum exhibits are static, offering little or no
interaction with the artifact, and rely on signage to tell the story.

Living History is the process of
taking a museum exhibit, removing the glass cases and putting the docents into the
costume of the period - where they can help visitors interpret what they are
seeing and share the mechanics and little details that make this history come
alive. Done properly, this should make the visitor's understanding of the
subject matter more complete, although this can be skewed by docent knowledge
and visitor interaction.
The Living History Display Group offers both methods to reach the public, as well as customized talks for local schools, research assistance into an individual soldier's service, participation in reenactments to gain a greater understanding of the life of a WWII mountain soldier and more. This opportunity allows and encourages the member to explore that area of WWII life that stirs their interest, and encourages them to share that interest with others. This is an ideal vehicle for students to explore historical research, acting, community involvement, museum studies and other potential careers.
