The Military Tradition

of Being

Coined

   Home Up

The tradition of the 'coin' is one based in military tradition.  Upon demand, the person who issues the coin can challenge the person awarded the coin to produce it at any time.  If the bearer can do so, the issuer owes the bearer a drink of their choice.  If the person awarded the coin fails to produce it, the awardee must buy the issuer a drink of his choice.  By producing the coin, the awardee is indicating that he or she is prepared to represent the unit at any time.  In this case, those members of the 10th Mountain Division Living History Display Group who have been coined represent the entire membership of the WWII division.
